Learning Targets

1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th – I can identify the layers of the Earth

3rd – I can diagram geologic time

Well, let’s see.  1st, 2nd, 4th, & 5th started on layers of the Earth and learned the new song.  You’ll find the video here on the website.  The link is right here.

Third, period, we discussed our homework last night and started discussing geologic time, but didn’t start notes yet.  We did an activity on stratigraphy instead.  We’ll get started tomorrow on notes.

Week 3 Vocabulary

  1. Geological time- The history of the Earth as determined by radioactive dating, rock sequences, and fossils.
  2. Fossils- hardened remains of organisms that give clues to Earth’s past
  3. Atmosphere- layer of air surrounding Earth
  4. Evaporation- when a liquid turns to a gas
  5. Condensation- when a gas turns to a liquid
  6. Precipitation- water falling from clouds
  7. Climate- an area’s averaged weather conditions over time
  8. Extinction- disappearance of a species
  9. Biogeochemical cycle- Movement of elements among the sold Earth, oceans, atmosphere, and organisms.

Today, we took Thinklink today. Most of us are finished, but there are a couple of people who need to finish up.

Homework

1st, 2st, 4th, 5th period

Intro to Geology Homework

Choose one of following writing prompts.

You are an alien writing a report back to your home planet about Earth.

 OR

You are a space traveler from Earth telling other planets about ours.

It must be at least ONE page long and have at least 10 facts about Earth.  Those facts should be UNDERLINED.

3rd Period

You have a worksheet to do.  Remember to try all questions.

1st, 2nd, 4th, & 5th Learning Target - I can utilize the scientific method to solve every day problems.

3rth Period Learning Target - I can use the scientific method to design an experiment for a given situation.

All classes will take the Think Link for science on Wednesday, August 31.  Please do your best to attend school that day so that we don’t have to make up the test later in the week.

1st, 2nd, 4th, & 5th Periods

Today, we went over our test that we took Friday and worked on our open response questions.  While all of us are at different stages, everyone is going to finish up tomorrow by writing their final draft.

3rd Period

Today, we worked on our open response on designing an experiment to test battery endurance.  Tomorrow, we’ll trade those papers around, get feedback from other groups, and then write our final draft.

Learning Targets by Class Period

1, 4 – I can use the scientific method in an every day situation

2 – 7th grade assembly

3 – I can demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method.

5 – I can identify the steps of the scientific method.

Today was the first time things began to differ in classes.  We had an assemblies yesterday and today, so that changed things a bit.

First and fourth started on their open response question that will be done in class in groups.  Third period took the Scientific Method test.  Fifth finished up their scientific method posters and study guides for the test tomorrow.

Homework is as follows:  On the sheet you were given list two advantages and two disadvantages of working in a group as well as two advantages and two disadvantages of working alone.  These should be in bullet form or numbered, NOT as an open response question.  Third period needs to add one situation where working alone is best and one situation where group work is best.  They should explain their reasoning for those choices.

Tomorrow is the vocabulary quiz as well as the scientific method test for first, second, fourth, and fifth.  The online study guide for the test is still available.  To find your vocabulary words, click here.

Learning Target - I can identify the steps of the scientific method.

We finished our posters today and worked on our review sheets.  A reminder – 3rd period has their test TOMORROW.  Everyone else has theirs FRIDAY.

Learning Target – I can identify the steps of the scientific method

We’ve finished up our notes and now we’re working on our study guide and coming up with ways to remember the steps to the scientific method.  Interesting phrases we’ve come up with, guys!

Every class but 3rd period, your test is on Friday.  Third period, you have your test on Thursday.  There’s a practice test available at the following link.  The password, it’s not a law or a hypothesis, but a _______.

Homework tonight is a worksheet on independent and dependent variables.  If you forgot it, you can download it or at least look at using the link below. Please remember, I’m available for homework help on homework nights from 6 until usually 9:30.

Identify the Controls and Variables

Forgot to post the vocabulary for this week.  Really out of the habit.  Sorry, guys!  I’ll get organized again soon!  Quiz is Friday!

Week 2 Vocabulary

  1. Asthenosphere- plasticlike lower mantle of Earth
  2. Lithosphere- crust and upper part of the mantle that is broken into plates
  3. Plate Tectonics- theory that Earth’s crust and upper mantle are broken into plates that move on the asthenosphere
  4. Constructive Forces- forces such as crustal deformation, faulting, volcanic eruptions and deposition of sediment that creates landforms
  5. Destructive Forces- forces such as weathering and erosion that creates landforms
  6. Weathering- breaking down of rock by nature
  7. Erosion- movement of rock and soil caused by water, wind, and ice
  8. Crustal Deformation- bending and tilting of Earth’s crust
  9. Faulting- breaking of rock formations
  10. Deposition of Sediment- settling of sediments moved by erosion
