Learning Target – I can find volume and mass of irregular and regular objects.

Lab Day!  Again!  Tired of them yet?

We learned how to find the volume of shapes, even if we couldn’t use a ruler to measure the sides.  We practiced using our graduated cylinders and our metric measuring skills.  Excellent job, guys!  We’ll finish tomorrow and then find the density of the objects as well.

Homework – Everyone is writing their proposal for their research project.  You have a form to use for that.  If you want to type it, that will be great.  Just remember you have to name your topic, tell why you chose it, what it has to do with science, what you already know, and what you plan on doing for your presentation.

1st, 2nd, and 4th period have an extra homework assignment.  They are to do an extra sheet on chemical and physical changes.

Learning Target – I can identify and create chemical changes.

Lab day!  We played with milk and vinegar and baking soda and more vinegar!  Good job, guys!  Hope you learned something about chemical changes.

Learning Target – I can identify chemical and physical changes and properties.

This was a “catching up with notes” day since we were out on Friday. We have just about completed the notes that we need for Chemical and Physical Changes and Properties. Tomorrow, all classes but one will be doing chemical changes mini labs.

We’ll have a volume and density lab on Thursday, and we have a special lab on Friday in reward for our ThinkLink score comparison across the district. Great job, guys!

Homework is a sheet on Chemical and Physical Changes and Properties. Remember not to look up definitions for the middle section.

Notes for this section will be posted soon. The test will be next week after we do our Unknowns lab which should be Monday and Tuesday, but I”ll let you know for certain tomorrow.

Learning Target – I can monitor phase changes by monitoring temperature.

We finally got to use the new burners today. Classes did a great job of being careful and using their best lab skills. Awesome job, guys.

Homework is to graph the data you gathered today while monitoring the temperature of your water as the ice melted and beyond. Remember, Time goes on the bottom and you’re counting by 1s. Do NOT skip!

Learning Target – I can understand units for measuring temperature and liquids.

Quiz was given in 1, 3, 4, 5 periods for using a thermometer. We’re ready to move ahead with our labs. 2nd will take theirs tomorrow. In classes that did not meet, we’ll also practice reading graduated cylinders again.

Homework for 1, 4, and 5 – Choose two objects and list 10 physical properties of each.

Learning Target – I can understand the differences between chemical and physical properties.

We started notes today, but didn’t get as far as I would have liked. We had to reteach how to read a thermometer. Seems to be a bit of a problem, there. Tomorrow, there’s a quiz over it. The class MUST pass in order to be able to do the lab on Wednesday.

Next up, reading a graduated cylinder and I think I’m going to go back over using a metric ruler because I have a feeling that’s not going to turn out well when we get started Thursday.

Please keep in mind we have several labs to do with this unit, but if we can’t get down how to measure, it’s not going to happen.

Also, the other fun today was the intro for Chemistry. We watched the “Meet the Elements” video as well as watching Daniel Radcliffe sing “The Element Song.” Anyone interested in giving it a try for extra credit? Here’s a video to watch.

Learning Target – I can identify a researchable topic and determine its link to science.

We worked on choosing topics for our research paper and project.  There are some excellent ideas and I feel like this will be a fun and informative way to get this done!  Remember, you can go ahead and start researching, but you don’t start on your paper until you get into your language arts/writing class.

Also moved around the room into new groups.  Hopefully, we’re settled for a little while.  At least until the next ThinkLink.

Get ready!  Monday starts off the Chemistry Unit!  Oh, boy!  Aren’t we excited???????

I’ll be listing some links and apps you can use while we’re studying this unit.

Learning Target – I can accurately measure using the metric system.

We reviewed measuring with a metric ruler and learned what those little lines meant so we’re not rounding any more.  We also reviewed reading a thermometer.  The NEW thing we did was reading a graduated cylinder.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to do it next week in lab.

Homework was a sheet on reading a thermometer and another one on reading a graduated cylinder.  Remember not to do the ones that are dark and you can’t read.  If you want to try them and get them right, you’ll get bonus points.
